The Benefits of Castor Oil Packs

I’ve been using castor oil packs the last few months for a few reasons. They’re known for helping with cramps, upset stomachs, constipation and period pain. I’ve personally felt the difference in using them and wanted to share the wealth!

What is castor oil?

Castor oil is a vegetable oil that comes from the seeds of the castor plant, ricinus communis. It is a highly functional oil and has benefits from being used to massage and break up scar tissue (which I did for my c-section), to increase hair/lash/eyebrow growth, as well as relieve constipation and stomach pain/cramps.

How do you make a castor oil pack?

To make a castor oil pack you take a large felt pad made specifically for this and drizzle about 2 tbsp castor oil over it. These pads are typically “water proof” so it won’t leak and get messy. Some people wrap themselves in plastic wrap to keep it contained. Personally I find when I use this brand of pack I don’t need that. There are more DIY ways of making a pack but I find this to be easier, less messy and take less time.

How do you wear it and for how long?

Carefully wrap the pack starting at your low ribs and then around your belly for period pain or on your right side (by your liver) for digestive distress. You can wear it for an hour or over night. I usually wear an old t shirt with it just in case it leaks a bit however this one doesn’t seem to make the same kind of mess. I get a bit crampy when I start my cycle so pairing this with the heating pad at night as made a HUGE difference for me and I no longer need to take pain reliever. I hate having to take that stuff so this has been a great find for me. I usually attempt to sleep with it on but take it off at some point during the night.

I hope this can help you if these issues apply to you! I’ve really felt a difference in my period pain since starting this regimen so I can’t recommend it enough. If you try this and it works for you, be sure to tag me on Instagram @AshleyPattenPilates and/or comment below!
